bike lust

Summer has attacked here, and I have been getting back on the bike(s). Slowly. Of course I have more time at work to peruse the internets, and to obsess about bikes I don't have. Excessive, superfluous, semi-useless, expensive, and awesome.

I used to obsess only about the kona bikehotrod. Lots of homemade choppers just don't appeal to me. Then I ran into Hannan choppers.

(resized because they stretched some small pic, and rehosted)

Geared, with an offset chain for the wide rear wheel, it seems pretty rideable. And hey, it's only $3990! And well, I think with someone making a bike like this, I have just about removed the last of my desire for a motorcycle. A bike chopper is just as ridiculous and desirable.

Since that is so inexpensive, maybe a go-one3 would be a decent second bike.

(screen capped form their flash gallery)

They start at $10k or so. They look too much like a car out of a bad 70's scifi movie not to love. And with the luggage rack, so practical.. you can take your underwear everywhere you go. Almost as much fun as the wire bike-lamborghini. Leaves the buick way behind.

I can't make this post without mentioning a long held desire for a Hanebrink bike.

(hotlinked, and a tandem, but you get the idea)

Although their web site has never actually worked, and that toptube looks awfully short for my desired pedal-to-handlebar distance, but that could be a perception of the scale. 8 inch wide tires (obligatory: omg).

Will I ever get any of these? Dunno, but they are nice to look at, and will keep me riding.

pyramid builder

Some of you may remember that I had a web version on "Drug Wars" a long time ago written in SiphonScript. I have been doing more php coding lately, and under the influence of too many old SG1 episodes have created a small web-based game.

Pyramid Builder

It might not be ready for prime time, but I hope it is at least a little fun. Also that is hosted off of my new games blog. Just starting, but

a show, tonight! thursday!

How many more posts can be gigspam in a row? Tonight at Trohpy's with Sassy Goose and Sedium, CockVanDyke play once again.

http://www.myspace.com/cockvandyke

I am doing backup vocals on more songs now, which is new and exciting. Not particularly fond of my voice, and not seeking out being a singer, but it does fill out a three-piece to have two vocals. We will be playing late tonight, last band of the night, so perhaps midnightish?

GO!

CockVanDyke gigspam. Friday night, 8pm!

Tonight's show is remarkably early, and right on 6th street. The sun may still be out when we start playing. 8pm at Troubadour again. The second time we are there, so we must be doing something right/wrong for them to ask us back. The nice thing is you can make it to our show, and then to that other show you want to see, yes?

You know this already, but here it is again.

http://myspace.com/cockvandyke

Did I mention we rock? We recorded last week, and it seems like it came out really well. Me and the drummer were syncing up swimmingly. We should have those new recordings on myspace in a week or so, so the bass playing there will finally be me.

When: 8pm Friday Oct 5th
Where: Troubadour Saloon, 6th St.
Bass Solos: 2

pedalboard project

It is an awesome feeling to put together a hardware project and have it actually work.

I needed a pedalboard, or bass pedals, to be able to play synths while playing an instrument for an upcoming band. MIDI bass pedals start at about $400. Having many other uses for $400 I tried to come up with an alternative. The pedals are a spare organ part. $16 off of ebay. The wood was spare stuff around the garage, but if I had to buy it it would have been $10 or so. The circuit board is from an Axispad USB game pad ($3?).

The wooden frame came together more easily than I thought, and I still need to add a removeable lid of some kind. I took all the wiring off the pedals and just used the switches, and found the right spots on the circuit board to solder them (I was able to always find the base of a resistor or a jumper, so I didn't have to do any desoldering or connect to a board trace), and now I am the proud owner of a set of USB bass pedals.

The low C only sends some sort of a reset because I ran out of switches on the game pad, but every pedal is independent, so it effectively has no polyphony limitations. Outside of how small it is. Took about 6 hours of work, so even if I figure in my time I came out ahead.

What next? Figure out how to spend the other $384, natch.

EDIT: Yes, the pedals are angled. They are slightly curved to the ark of a leg. My woodwork isn't _that_ bad.

CockVanDyke!

We are playing again. It is on a weekenight. It is late. Sleep is not an excuse to not be there.

11pm at Troubadour Saloon, 503? 501?
pizza crust

This has been asked for by multiple people multiple times. For the record.

Pizza Crust (passed down from my mother, who got it from astral communication with the elder culinary lords)

1 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar (succanut)
1 package _rapid_ rise yeast
1 tsp salt
1+ Tbsp olive oil
2.5 cups white flour
some CRISCO!

Preheat oven to 200F. When it gets there, turn it off.

Put the water in a medium bowl, make sure it is not too hot. Add the sugar, stir to dissolve.

Add the yeast package and stir just slightly. Watch, make sure the yeast is alive (you should see it growing in about a minute)

Add the salt, oil, and flour. Mix with a spoon until that gets way annoying, then use your hands. Add just a little flour as needed, but you want to add as little as possible.

Knead the dough for 4-5 minutes. Make a ball. Pour a little bit of olive oil to cover the ball.

Cover with a damp cloth, put inside the warmed up oven (remember to turn it off!).

Allow to rise for 60 minutes.

Grease pizza pan with Crisco brand kill you dead on the spot hydrogenated fat product (or other solid-at-room-temperature-fat-product).

After the hour, pull out the dough, press into the pan. Put the pan back in the oven (still turned off!), let it rise for another 15 minutes or so.

Take it out, press it down and back into the corners. Use a fork to poke a few holes in it the dough to prevent bubbles.

Charge up your lasers, throw down some sauce, toppings and cheese-related-substance, and scorch at 450F. Topping preparation is another subject, but one thing to keep in mind is to keep water content low. Dry out any veggies, drain olives, artichokes, etc, so there isn't much water content. For sauce I have found Whole Foods organic low fat spaghetti sauce to work well, and has no sugar. I have made my own sauce before, but it wasn't worth the effort for me. Usually I will cook it at 450 for about 10 minutes, but really I keep checking the bottom until it is decently browned. Then I switch the oven to broil and watch it very carefully for another minute, maybe two. But this is because I use Vegan Gourmet cheese, other cheeses may need different treatment.

gigspam, again.

The tuesday gig was lightly attended, to say the least. But it was a good first practice gig, and everything went really well. The audience was almost totally hot chicks. The audience was also about 5 people.

So tonight at Red 7, 10pm-ish, we are playing again, with 140% more headbanging and non-robotic stage antics, and two power kicks guaranteed. Leaping is optional, but certainly possible. Verification that we are playing listed on Red 7's page. And for those that missed it, our page has songs to listen to and hideous layout to admire.

And for shopgrrrl, I discussed it with the band and we decided that the birthday kid can come too.

Just a late note to let you know I'll be playing with CockVanDyke at Woody's South this (Tuesday the 26th) evening. It will be a short-ish set, going on some time after 9:30pm.

http://www.woodyssouth.com

http://myspace.com/cockvandyke

This is our first gig, although I don't expect any trainwrecks. We also play at Red 7 on friday evening, but I will remind you again, surely. I've been on stage plenty, but it has been a while since I have performed with a band, and I am looking forward to it. I'll spare you the tale of getting and keeping a drummer for this band, but it has been a real pain and we finally get to reap a little reward.

Usually I only want to see one or two of the bands in any particular day party. All gathered from showlistaustin.

Lap Steel Bass

A recent project success story. Listening to Morphine will do this to you. A lap steel bass.

All I needed was a hand saw and a drill. Thanks to Abel for the drill. The electronics were taken from the carcass of another bass.

And the obligatory mp3. Think John Parish. Yeah, I like that quarter tone where it is.

slide-bass-demo.mp3 (2.4MB)

It does need a lot of effecting to clean it up, but I think it sings pretty well.

Oh, and posting it to talkbass with a bit more technical info..

the new time-sink

I have had it for three weeks, so I guess I had better post about ****MY NEW BASS****.

The NS Design CR4M (in front of my half stack). I will not tell the (long) story of getting a working one in my hands. I have it now, and that is sufficient.

For those less familliar, about the bass... It is an electric upright bass (EUB) designed by Ned Steinberger, the same guy who made the headless Steinberger basses and guitars. The string/fingerboard geometry is just like a doublebass (41.5" scale length), but no heel on the neck, and... no body.

(specs and such)

There are three separate pickups really. First the magnetics. They sound pretty much like an electric bass. There are also two different piezos in the bridge, a set for pizzicato, and a single one for arco. In the mp3, the bass line is magnetic, the melody is the pizz piezo, and the arco is with the, well, the arco piezo. And yes, oh yes there are disclaimers about the recording. I just made it this morning, and wanted to get something at all recorded. I am trying to get some lessons for my arco playing, as it is taking the longest of my doublebass technique to come back.

a sample mp3, 3 voices (you might recognize the tune)

In listening to the bass direct without an amp or a room, the piezo sound direly needs help. The recording has tiny amounts of all sorts of effects (compression, reverb/delay, chorus). It may take a while for me to find what exact combination really brings it out of hiding, but just these tiny amounts help significantly. Played through an amp, the room provides much of what is needed thankfully, or I would be on the quest for the perfect chorus, compressor, and reverb.

The bass comes with a set of strings installed that are a lot like electric bass guitar strings. Once I put on the hybrid helicore strings it was a whole new burrito to deal with. I am still working on developing the stamina to play this. The strings are monstrous ropes. The left hand strength and the callouses are coming though. I rehearsed with a trio last weekend, and it wore me out pretty well. They are still emailing me, so I am guessing I am close enough to par that they will keep me, but I will still be looking for some other groups to try out (them and me). So, if you happen to notice me being _even more_ of a shut in, this is probably why.

I went to the new Converse outlet store up in Round Rock (yes, I think there used to be one up there, but this is a new-ish outlet mall). There was also a Vans outlet, but I had already bought 2 pairs of Vans today. I finally picked up a pair of blacked-out chucks, and another pair of.. fairly indescribable chucks.

This is also the day that our camera died in a new and exciting way, so this picture is from an iSight.

road trip report

So leemling only has 2 weeks between semesters to go on any sort of vacation, so she schemed up this plan to take a road trip to NorCal. I was, of course, cautious at first. I ended up having a lot of fun, and getting very exhausted.

Friday the 11th, Day 1: Getting out of Texas is boring. But the B&B in Truth or Consequences was very nice. A giant mineral springs hot bath with a waterfall...

Saturday, Day 2: Stopped for some lunch in Albuquerque for lunch and a walk. A neat place, stopped at the grocery co-op, and walked the university drag. Santa Fe was a big pain in the ass. We tried to make it in to the downtown area, but it was just too much stress to deal with. Instead we stopped at Kakawa Chocolate House, and a Himalayan restaurant.

Sunday, Day 3: Grand Canyon. Nothing compares to seeing it in person. The rest of the day was in the car, driving through construction zones in Arizona.

Monday, Day 4: Spent the greater part of the afternoon in Berkeley. Lunch at Long Life Vegi Restaurant, walked around for maybe 3 hours, plus visited the game store (where a 2 year old kept trying to give me plastic animals), various places on the way.. saw dozens of Indian/Pakistani/Nepalese restaurants.. a vegan friendly Jamaican place (would like to try that). And of course, for dinner, Cha Ya, which is a required stop now. The last roll we had was like biting the head off of a sentient vegetable creature. There is the crunchy skull, some chewey skin, the brain, some eyeballs.. It was actually filled with tofu and avocado along with some crunchy veggies, and then topped off with some seaweed and watercress. Amazing stuff, and has given me interest in trying to make sushi again. Of sorts. Then went to Napa in the evening and snacked at a brewpub. Then got into Chico fairly late.

Joe's Brewery in Napa..

and the view from the patio.

Tuesday, Day 5: Goofed off in Chico with Lori, our host. Hit Trader Joe's. Some things there are ho-hum. Then others... ODL. I could shop there every week. It is like an organic store brand that took over the store. Also a local health food shop where I found some interesting barleywine, stopped in at Butte Creek Brewing, some liquor stores, and had lunch at the Sierra Nevada brewpub.

The town lake of Chico.

and the Sierra Nevada brewery...

Also went over to Paradise and bugged around some antique/junk shops, and had an average meal at a horrible Thai restaurant. We have brown rice? Absolutely! Just wait here for 50 minutes, and I will tell you it will be right out every 5 minutes. Sound good? On the plus side, I found an antique Italian cigar ashtray,

and a mystery chink of iron. I am guessing it has something to do with mining or railroads (vague, yes). Any clues?

Wednesday, Day 6: Went to Fort Bragg (w/Lori) and went to lunch at the North Coast Brewing brew pub, aka mecca. I had lots of their beers on tap. Only thing I had never tried was Red Seal Cask Conditioned, but it was not spectacular. Rasputin stout on tap, was, in fact, spectacular.

Bought some beer, went to the little shops, and went to the farmer's market. Also snacked at the raw foods kitchen which was neat. Raw lasagna, lemon poppyseed cake, carrot cake, and more. Hung out for a while at glass beach, which was my first experience with the northern pacific coast.

Later ate at Mendo Bistro. Not nearly as good as we had hoped (hand made pasta sound promising, but was a letdown), but the service was outstanding. Finished out the evening with a few more beers at North Coast, natch.

Thursday, Day 7: Breakfast at Cafe 1, the tiny restaurant in front of the tiny motel we stayed at. Vegan breakfast burrito the size of your head? Yes please.

My plate, the tofu scramble. Yes, vegan cheese.

More very pretty rocks and water. First went to a few parks on the coast between Fort Bragg and Mendocino, having decided to skip Mendocino proper. Fort Bragg is a place that seems to still not know it is a tourist spot, which was wonderful, and also made me feel more like a tourist. (: I mention this, because according to what we read, Mendocino knows.

On the way back went to Ukiah, their brewery/brewpub. Then in Chico went to a pretty big farmers market, ate dinner at Grilla Bites.

Friday, Day 8: Started heading home. Breakfast at a Lousiana style cafe in Nevada City CA with vegan breakfast.

The restaurant, right next to the tiny farmers market.

Heading out of CA the line in the geography is abrupt. In the Sierra range was a rest stop with a small hikig trail attached, which we took advantage of.

Then stopped in Reno for lunch at YET ANOTHER BREWPUB. Made it all the way across Nevada on 50 to Delta, UT.

Saturday, Day 9: Utah has some amazing scenic overlooks.

Then stopped in Moab and had lunch at YAB. Made it to an altitude of around 10800 feet, and stopped at a rest stop with pet therapy. It was this tiny little gas station, attended by an exteremely short old lady and her two cats. Voted best rest stop by Jeremiah®.

Made it to Alamosa quite tired. And because of the altitude, found it hard to sleep.

Sunday, Day Omega: This was just driving all day. Texas, once again, AFA scenery is concerned, is boring. Over 800 miles on our last day.

Monday, Recovery: Didn't do jack.

Things learned, noted, and/or achieved.:

- No, we did not go to every brewpub in our path, but if they were there and convenient we went. Waitresses gave me funny looks when asking for half pints. I just wanted to be able to try more beers.

- Small towns may be scary in Texas, but in CA they rock.

- Bottled beer can survive high altitude just fine (made it back with a case of Old Stock 2006, and a handful of tall bottles from CA and CO).

- Gas in TX is cheap.

- I didn't miss doing dishes.

time capsule: TV People

This weekend the members of an old band I was in, TV People, is having a little reunion to play, drink, and reminisce about old conquests and arguments. And dear Hastur, the drinking!

I dug up all the old cds I had to reaccquaint myself with the songs, and felt I should share this little time capsule. I played mostly bass, sometimes guitar, and on the studio tracks sometimes bass and a guitar track.

5 years ago we visited a studio, and these are the resulting rough mixes.

I.G.P. (actually on guitar on this track, it was always a lot of fun)
Flippant (the fretted bass..)
I Robot, Guitar
Sister Francis (probably my favorite track. I had such joy playing the 2 note guitar solo! Trying to channel Bob Mould perhaps.)
Puff (I'd STILL like to redo the bass into solo. intonation was not good at all)

Also found some 4-track recordings burned to cd that are a bit older even.

Fading (4-track)
Fading (even noisier)
I Robot, Guitar (4-track)
I Robot, Guitar (another noisy one)
I.G.P. (rilly noisy version)
Take me away (4-track)
